Mini-Meets in Maple Ridge

MRMPA will be hosting monthly shooting mini-meets. The details are still to be finalized. The meets will be held on Tuesdays. We normally shoot from 4-6:30 pm but would make the mini-meet day a later start time to accommodate those coming from other parts of the lower mainland. I am hoping you can help me out by forwarding this note to any pentathlete interested in attending. In their response PLEASE ADVISE ME OF THE EARLIEST TIME AVAILABLE TO BE READY ON THE LINE. If anyone has any questions please contact me or Bill at macdonaldfarm@shaw.ca.

Fencing Training in Victoria:

September 4th at 7:30 (but aim for 7:15 so we can get some equipment sorted out). The cost of the course is $75, but we don't insist on money for the first session, so people can get their feet wet without getting their wallets scorched. Incidentally, we don't have facilities for payment on plastic,
so it's paper in either cash or cheque form.

The course will run for approximately ten weeks, allowing for the likely loss of one or maybe two evenings between the start date and the end of November. It will run each Thursday between the hours of 7:30-ish to 9:30-ish.

Location is St Andrew's Elementary School, at the corner of Pandora and Vancouver; Pandora is a one way street, so you'll most likely approach from Cook Street. If so, it's the last entrance on your right before Vancouver. Don't overshoot, or you'll end up at McDonalds, and we wouldn't want that...
The gym is the lower building on the right hand side of the parking lot.

There's usually ample parking.

Bring with you comfortable leg wear; no shorts, no skirts, preferably no jeans. Sweat pants are good, providing enough protection without hampering movement.

Junior Achievement Award ProgramFencing

RECREATIONAL AND JUNIOR ACHIEVEMENT AWARDS PROGRAM The Junior Achievement Awards Program (JAAP) is intended to allow new comers and recreational athletes, of all abilities, to participate in the sport of Modern Pentathlon at a non-threatening introductory level.  SCHEDULE

"If you have chosen to be a modern pentathlete you will face one of the greatest challenges of your life.  You will be challenging yourself physically, mentally and emotionally.  The successful pentathlete knows their weaknesses and works to improve them.  As pentathletes we are humbled daily, as we must train each event with those that are specialist in their own field.  By meeting and competing with those that are great in their own sport we learn, and we use what we learn to achieve our goals.  The beauty of the modern pentathlon is that there is always somewhere to improve.  My advice is to learn to enjoy every part of this sport" Ian Soellner, Olympic and International Level Pentathlete.

The facilities required for a competition include: Gymnasium or other indoor similar open space to accommodate the number of competitors in the air pistol competition,  25m or 50m swimming pool and a  400m running track or measured distance.

Time required for a competition:  One half hour for each line of air pistol shooting, one hour for the running phase, one hour for up to 35 swimming competitors plus set-up time and travel to and from venues would require additional time.

Number of officials required:

Registrar : One or two persons to record the names of the competitors.

Chief Scorer: One person to record the names and scores of the athletes during the competition on a computer program or by hand.

Air Pistol Competition : At least one range master and t

Running Competition: One Official Starter, timers for each competitor in each heat and one recorder.

Swimming Competition : One Official Starter, a  timer for each lane and one recorder.

All recorders and scribes should deliver their results to the chief scorer so that the results may be entered into the scoring program as efficiently as possible. Awards and acknowledgements are usually presented at the end of each competition and the results are emailed or sent to the provincial office for compilation in the competitions file.

New CCES Website Aims to Help Athletes Stay Clean : www.cces.ca  Read more:

OTTAWA - The Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport (CCES), Canada's internationally recognized sport ethics and national anti-doping agency, is making an innovative new addition to its arsenal in the fight against drugs in sport with this Friday's launch of a fully revamped Website. The all-new, dynamic site (www.cces.ca) offers athletes, coaches, sports administrators, parents, and anyone else involved in sport an authoritative, regularly-updated source of information, news, resources, and services on ethics in sport, fair play, and drug-free sport. The site also features an automated subscription service that enables anyone to receive regular CCES updates on doping issues, banned substances and methods, doping control statistics, advisory notes, new initiatives, and more. It is also a sports portal of sorts, with links to numerous National Sport Organizations and other related Canadian and international online resources. "Our new site is designed to provide athletes with the resources and practical tools they need to make an informed, personal decision to compete clean and fair, and to avoid substances that can inadvertently result in a positive doping test" says Paul Melia, CCES Chief Operating Officer. "We want athletes, coaches, and everyone else in the sporting community to view the site as their own resource, and we've built it in a way that will allow us to add content and information important to anyone interested in preserving and promoting fair and ethical competition." In addition to the complete an updated list of Prohibited Substances and Methods from the IOC, the site provides detailed information on CCES doping control procedures, athlete's rights and responsibilities. "When athletes reach a level where they are subject to doping control testing, they have a lot of questions about the procedures, what's expected of them and what their rights are in the process," says Paul Melia. "We've tried to answer all of these questions and more on the site in clear, simple language." Balancing practical information on doping, the site will also serve as a forum for ongoing discussions on the subject of ethics in sport, news on the Canadian Strategy on Ethical Conduct in Sport, and other initiatives in which the CCES is involved. "Ultimately, the decision to compete ethically and doping-free is one that will be made by each athlete on an individual basis," says Paul Melia. "It is important that athletes, coaches, and others who can help influence it understand the ethical underpinnings of fair play and the meaning of true sport."

Please note: All pentathletes competing in Canada and internationally and their coaches should keep fully up-to-date on this issue. The site also features an automated subscription service that enables anyone to receive regular CCES updates on doping issues, banned substances and methods, doping control statistics, advisory notes, new initiatives, and more. I strongly advise you to subscribe to this service. DON'T FORGET - IF YOU USE ANY PRESCRIPTION OR OVER-THE-COUNTER MEDICATION - YOU MUST CHECK WITH THE CCES LISTS TO SEE IF IT IS ALLOWABLE. FOR EXAMPLE, IF YOU USE AN INHALER, YOU NEED TO REGISTER YOUR MEDICATION WITH THE CCES EVERY YEAR. CHECK THE REGULATIONS CAREFULLY - IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY. REMEMBER - IF YOU ARE A NATIONAL TEAM MEMBER, YOU COULD BE SUBJECT TO RANDOM DOPING CONTROL BY CCES.
