Provincials Results (see story below Charlotte Cronin and pictures by Monica Pinette, thank-you both!)
Our
14th Annual Provincial Championships were hosted by the Maple Ridge Modern
Pentathlon Club. The 1st event of the weekend started in Vancouver with the
Ride at Southlands Riding Stables. Rick Maynard and family provided the
perfect setting, great course and all but two of the horses provided; tacked
and ready to go. It doesn't get much better than that. The Points North Pony
Club athletes Jill and Katie organized their ride in Port McNeill the day
before. We had a total of 10 riders this year.
Sunday
came an hour earlier than we would have liked. Despite unexpected surprises
waiting for organizers at the Albion Hall, the shoot started on schedule. Who
would have thought everyone wanted to shoot! We battled the clock for the rest
of the day. Next year we will relegate non runners to the last line!! Athletes
rose to the occasion and kept things moving as rapidly as possible. It was
easy with the run. Conditions were so miserably wet that no one was on
the track longer than absolutely necessary. Lunch was delicious and in the
warmth of the hall a much welcome respite time to dry out.
Fencing
for the uninitiated was fast paced and intense. Goodwill always prevails,
however and valuable tips on technique were offered throughout the event. Who
got the two hits on Toshi?
We
gained some time and Katrina was able to persuade the pool folk to move us
back 30 minutes. Using only three lanes made the heats very efficient.
Everyone who participated had better than expected results despite being the
last event of a very busy weekend. Must have been the starting blocks!!
Our
awards were handed out where time permitted. BCMPA President's Volunteer
Awards were presented to Rimon Gendi and Ally Stewart.Together, they have over
30 years association with Maple Ridge as parents of athletes, volunteers
and in Rimon's case as a shooting coach and Ally as Treasurer for BCMPA.
Our
tradition of awarding Aggregate medals to athletes competing in all five
events continues. Gold medals were earned by Toshi Ihara with a staggering
5546 points and Lesley Reitel a new recruit being mentored by Tik
Maynard. Finally our Junior, Katie Church, trying fencing for the first time
went home with Gold in her pocket. Silver medals were awarded to Tik who was
close on Toshi's heels all day earning 5380 points and Colby Stafford who also
garnered over 4000 pts
Excellence
Awards were earned by Tik and Toshi. Meeting Performance standards and
participation in five events meant an extra $150 to them. Congratulations.
Lots
of volunteers make for a great day. Thanks to Maple Ridge for their hard work
and all the members from other clubs who rally on the day to lend their
expertise and support. It was great to see former athletes like Kim Eagles an
Olympian and Bob Noble, returning as a Master competitor. What is always the
most gratifying is to see new members starting in our sport so there were
smiles all around.
