Canadian Modern Pentathlon Nationals 2004 July 1 thru 4, Airdrie , Alberta

The Organizing committee under the leadership of Gordon McMillan did a wonderful job hosing the competition. The venues were excellent and all very close together, which made it very easy to drive from one site to another.

The Calgary Shooting Club prepared for their part by creating 18 10-meter air gun stations. This unique arrangement allowed for a maximum number of athletes on each line and in the case of the Men, meant only one line was necessary.

Airdrie Recreation hosted the fencing and swimming events. The run was done in a park next to the Rec Centre.

Airdrie Equestrian Centre supplied a very large riding ring and the course was challenging. There were only three clear rounds out of 17 Riders. As always Alberta can provide a string of excellent and willing horses.

15 men competed on Day 1. Toshi Ihara, Tik Maynard and Will Pratt finished one, two, and three.Toshi was first in Fence and Swim, Tik was first in the run with a PB in the shoot. Will was first in the ride and the shoot.

A record turnout of women, 26 competed on Day 2. This was the most intense and exciting competition in the history of Canadian Modern Pentathlon. It was deemed  the final qualifier for the Olympic Games. Quebec athlete, Kara Grant won the Sr Women’s event and confirmed her attendance in the 2004 Games. She will be accompanied by our Monica Pinette who had previously been named to the Olympic Team with her top 12 finish in Beijing earlier this year. Their scores surpassed anything we have seen accomplished by women in Canada . They are truly a credit to our sport and they acknowledge the work of the Canadian Coach, Phillip Waeffler in getting them where they are today.

BC women  placed well in all events. Natasha Lineham was 4th  in Srs. In the junior category Ashley Hicks had an outstanding competition of personal bests and came home with a Bronze Medal. Kelly Fitzsimmons was 4th  and had one of the three clear riding rounds of the competition and Annie Deleenheer was 5th. Annie was using Pentathlon nationals as a warm up to the International Tetrathlon  competition for which she had previously qualified. The athletes watched in awe as Ontario competitor Elena Bales came 1st or 2nd in all five events. She will be our new CAMPA rising star.

In Youth B , Catherine Thwaites brought home the Silver medal. She had an outstanding personal best shoot. Catherine was the youngest member of our BC Team. Ontario and Alberta are preparing a contingency of young athletes. BC needs their blueprint for recruitment!!

The Calgary Modern Pentathlon Club yet again did an excellent job hosting this event. A great turnout of athletes, parents and supporters on both days made this event very enjoyable. Thank you for hosting us.

BC athletes would like to thank Lorraine Thwaites the official chaperone and husband Bill and son Christopher who were very busy unofficial helpers.

Thanks to Riding Coach Rick Maynard for his astute and thoughtful appraisal of horses and the course. The riders are always grateful for that support.

Support also from Senior athletes and parents, Gillian Pinette, Robin Taylor and Jacquie Lineham made these Nationals an event to remember for all concerned.
