July 1, 2008

Dear Friend of Pentathlon,

In Modern Pentathlon at the Olympic level, competing

countries are only allowed to send four athletes – two

women and two men. Three Canadians, Monica Pinette of

Langley, B.C., Kara Grant of Stratford, P.E.I., and Joshua

Riker-Fox of Delacour, A.B. have successfully qualified for

the upcoming 2008 Summer Games in Modern Pentathlon –

a superb achievement.

These outstanding athletes have trained hard and sacrificed

much to arrive at the pinnacle of competition in Beijing. Any

accolades are richly deserved.

With your generous financial support, the Canadian Modern

Pentathlon Association (CAMPA) will have the resources to

provide expert coaching, to offset travel expenses and to

provide modest living allowances to existing and rising stars,

and continue to do so in the years to come. You too will be

part of Canada's Olympic Team!

Yours in the Olympic spirit,

John Emery, Chair / Colin Peace, Allumni

Fundraising Committee,

Canadian Modern Pentathlon Association

PS. Please complete and return the form right now,

while it’s in your hand. Become a Founding Supporter

of Canadian Pentathlon.

Modern PENTATHLON An Intriguing Partnership Proposal

Become a Founding Supporter of Modern Pentathlon in Canada!

Friend of Pentathlon ($25.00 - 100.00)

You are an interested friend or family member of an athlete, or a frequent spectator who finds

Pentathlon captivating. In any case, you want to help the sport grow and assist Canada’s athletes in

getting the best coaching available.

Bronze Supporter ($250.00)

A Bronze Supporter might be described as above, but with more resources to lend to worthy causes.

Another group interested in assisting at this level might be vendors and equipment suppliers who

benefit from strong, active athletic organizations.

Silver Supporter ($500.00)

Extended families or local groups might want to combine their efforts into an annual yard

sale, or on-going sales of branded goods and clothing. These activities not only generate

funds, they also create life-long fans and media exposure.

Gold Supporter ($1,000.00)

A successful business owner with a particular affection for Pentathlon could see merit in

sponsorship at this level. Such support can be viewed as part of marketing.

Patron of Pentathlon ($5,000.00)

A donation from a foundation, company, or family fund would entitle the giver to this

honourary title. Naturally, this does not preclude the opportunity of such support from any

generous donor.

All supporters will benefit from the knowledge that their generosity helps worthy, young

athletes achieve their goals, for themselves, for their team and for Canada.

Donations in this Olympic Year will entitle the donor to become a Founding

Supporter of Canadian Modern Pentathlon. All donors will be recognized.

NEWS RELEASE: July 19, 2006

Canadian champions, international athletes, and Olympians compete for national pentathlon title

On July 29th and 30th  the  largest field of participants since 1998 will compete in the Canadian pentathlon championships, all in a single day, right here in Vancouver. Swiss, American and Mexican athletes will compete along side 2004 Olympians Monica Pinette of Langley , BC and Kara Grant of PEI .

Pinette won the Gold medal at the Pan American Championship last month in Mexico City , Grant won the bronze. Their results and those of Josh Riker Fox of Calgary and Tik Maynard of Vancouver secured Canada four spots (the maximum number) for the Pan American Games in Brazil next year.

The men compete on Saturday, Maynard is the reigning champion and on Sunday Ottawa ’s Elena Bales will be defending her 2005 title as Canadian champion against a strong field of over twenty women including Grant and Pinette who have also previously held the title.

The Shooting, fencing and swimming components of the pentathlon will be held at St. Georges School and the riding and running will take place in the afternoon at the Southlands riding club. The athletes will be riding horses they have never ridden before over a show jumping course, it is always an exciting event to watch. The run will be a chase with a staggered start, thereby making the first competitor across the finish line the winner of the entire day.

National team coach Philipp Waeffler predicts “it will be a very successful competition; the international level of our top athletes is much higher than in the past years. Canadian Nationals has become attractive for other nations to compete at; they can measure themselves against our Canadians.”

Harassment in Sport:

Sport BC is committed to working towards the goal so that every participant from "sandlot to podium" is provided a safe environment in which to participate. Harassment in sport is a serious issue that needs to be addressed by everyone involved in the amateur sport system, from administrators to coaches to athletes to volunteers. Sport BC has (in collaboration with many partners) taken a leadership role on this issue by providing template policies, developing an action plan and delivering a series of educational and training workshops to individuals within the sport system.
